Psycho Cross a "Slashing" Success!

Halloween weekend's Psycho Cross was a "slashing" success, with over 120 riders who took on the cold, wet, and muddy conditions. Riders came out in force (and some in costume) over the almost 1-mile long course that twisted and turned over the velodrome grounds. Announcer Bruce Dickman did a great job calling the event - thanks Bruce! WABE 90.1 FM Atlanta was on-hand to record some audio for their Atlanta Sounds series. The "Blue Shoot" gave riders a chance to test their speed and handling skills, with a prize (and bragging rights) going to the rider who could beat the run-up and stay on his/her bike. Maybe we'll have a winner next year!

SEW Cycling Finale Switched to "Psycho Cross"!

THIS JUST IN!!! Due to the rain out of Thomsen, LTD. presents 'The Madison', the conclusion of the South Eastern Women's (SEW) cycling series has been switched to the first ever cyclocross race at the velodrome...Psycho Cross on Halloween, Saturday October 31st. SEW is really excited about partnering with the Dick Lane Velodrome on this event. It's the first event of its kind at the velodrome, and it's something that everyone can participate in...so come out and be a part of history in the making!

The women's race starts at 3:30pm and goes for 30 minutes. Field sizes are limited and will fill up. Pre-registration is available on the Dick Lane Velodrome Psycho Cross website. Also, SEW will have prizes for the women's field and raffle off the pink Jamis Earth Cruiser to one lucky ticket holder!

Halloween costumes are not mandatory for Psycho Cross...but definitely encouraged!

Down, But Not Out: Rain Cancels Thomsen, LTD. presents 'The Madison'

Due to the incliment weather this weekend, the good folks at the Dick Lane Velodrome made an executive decision to cancel the last Pro Race Series and SEW event, Thomsen, LTD. presents 'The Madison'.

However, we here at SEW will not let the rain ruin our last race of the series! We've committed to giving you six races this season, and that's what we're going to deliver. Keep an eye on the website, as plans are already in the works for a make-up event for double points and lots of SEW prizes, including a pink Jamis Earth Cruiser One!

Thanks for your patience...but much like the women of the Southeast Women's Cycling series, Mother Nature is a force to be reckoned with!

Final SEW Series Event of 2009...9/19 at the Dick Lane Velodrome!

The Dick Lane Velodrome will host this season's final SEW series event of 2009 in conjunction with the final Pro Race Series event: Thomsen, Ltd. presents 'The Madison' this Saturday, September 19th. Apart from the racing excitement, we'll be raffling off a pink Jamis Earth Cruiser to one lucky ticket holder, in addition to all of the prizes from our generous DLV and SEW sponsors!

Just a reminder, this is the series finale for DOUBLE points! However, there is one small catch: in order to race, you must have already taken the beginner program, or have raced on a track before. Racing on the track takes a level of bike handling skill that does not come overnight, nor does it necessarily transfer from any other cycling discipline, that's why the experience is required. This is done for not only for your safety, but for the safety of all riders on the velodrome. If you have any questions about whether or not you meet these qualifications, please email Jeff Hopkins at jeff@dicklanevelodrome.com.

This is a really exciting "first" for both the velodrome event itself and the SEW series, because we want to encourage women of all ability levels to try different aspects of the sport. Please come out to the track this Saturday and join us in supporting women's racing!

Women's US10k Classic Labor Day Weekend

ATTENTION ladies!!! The $10,000 US10k Classic is now a Women's OPEN event!

The Races start at 7:15AM (men) and 7:20AM (women) sharp on Monday morning, September 7, 2009.

Packet and number pickup will be at the race hotel (Hawthorne Suites) on Sunday, September 6th, from 3:00 PM – 8:00 PM. This is a change from year’s past so make sure to be there by 8:00 to get your number.

Course Description:

The course is a straight shot from the Galleria to Whitewater. It is exactly 10K. It is hilly and a pre-ride is encouraged. The finish is the same as the men’s, a fast downhill. At approximately 5 miles you will switch from the right side of the road to the left. This will be well marked and at the top of the last climb.

Numbers:

Use two hip numbers, helmet number, and a frame number. You must use all numbers.

Parking and Shuttling:

All competitors will park at the Start line at Cumberland Mall on South Cobb Parkway (route 41) just south of I-75. Since the Finish is six miles away at White Water, riders will have a choice of riding their bikes back to their car or getting a shuttle back to Cumberland Mall. We cannot fit bicycles on the shuttle so we suggest either riding back to the start or sending a teammate on the shuttle to pick up the car. There is very little parking at the Finish so we urge you to use the shuttle buses.

Racing on the Velodrome...

If you've been following the SEW series, you probably know by now that the final race of the 2009 SEW series will be held on the Dick Lane Velodrome in East Point, Georgia on September 19th for double points. This is really exciting for both the velodrome event itself and the SEW series, because we want to encourage women of all ability levels to try different aspects of the sport!

However, there is one small catch: you have to have already taken the beginner program.

The beginner program is four sessions long. But before you can race in one of the big "Pro Race Series" (formerly Festival of Speed) events at the velodrome, you also must have gotten a minimum of four of the beginner race nights under your belt...or skinsuit, or whatever. Racing on the track takes a level of bike handling skill that does not come overnight, nor does it necessarily transfer from any other cycling discipline, that's why the beginner's classes are required. This is done for not only for your safety, but for the safety of all riders on the velodrome.

That said, if you have not already taken the beginners class, you will NOT be allowed to race the final SEW race on the velodrome. Unfortunately at this point in the game, there is just not enough time to take the four beginners class sessions, and four beginners race nights required to compete at the Pro Race Series level on the velodrome this year. That's the bad news, sorry about that.

The good news is that the kind folks at the velodrome have agreed to continue honoring that SEW coupon we announced at the start of the season for a discount on the beginner program for 2010, which runs from April to September - plenty of time to get a lot of practice on the velodrome! Jamis Bicycles Donates Cruiser to SEW Series!

2009 marks the second year of the Southeast Women's Cycling (SEW) series, a grassroots effort - for women, by women - which aims to encourage participation in competitive cycling at all levels. The ultimate goal of this series is to grow the sport of women's cycling by providing an environment that is both challenging and fun. As a result, race promoters are able to see that women's racing IS strong in the Southeast, and that women deserve a place at each and every race.

As further proof of their commitment to women's development in the sport, Jamis Bicycles donated a pink cruiser bicycle that will be awarded to one lucky participant in the SEW series at the end of season awards bash, which will be held this September at the Grange Public House, in Decatur, Georgia. Carine Joannou, Jamis Bicycles President, had this to say, "Jamis Bicycles is excited to be involved with to the SEW series, and support the healthy development of women in the sport of cycling."

Participation in the SEW series is open to women who are racing their first race, all the way up to the top professionals in the nation, including Colavita/Sutter Home professional cyclist Tina Pic, also sponsored by Jamis Bicycles. The participation of such a diverse group of decorated athletes in the SEW series can reduce some of the typical "barriers" to the new racer just by having an approachable group of women with valuable knowledge of the sport, and who can help make racing a fun experience for the new cyclist. Thanks to Carine and her contribution to developing the sport of women's cycling, the donation of the Jamis cruiser bicycle to the SEW series is also helping SEW reach its vision: to establish a series that can run for years to come, guaranteeing the presence of women's racing with fields large enough to be profitable for race promoters and sponsors.
